Christian Science—or Christianly scientific healing—as discovered, taught and demonstrated by Mary Baker Eddy, is a unique method of spiritual healing, based entirely and exclusively on the teachings and demonstrations of Christ Jesus, his Sermon on the Mount, the Ten Commandments, and an understanding of God, Spirit, as the only Mind and healer.
It is called a Science because “science” is truth based on universal, eternal laws which anyone can study, practice and prove in their own life, like the science of mathematics or the science of music. This Science is founded on divine laws, and in particular, on the first great Commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” This “me” is infinite Spirit, the source and cause of all creation. Since Spirit, and not matter, is the source of our life and health, our companionship and supply, our clarity of thought and strength of action, therefore prayer based on trust in and fidelity to God, Spirit, is effective in maintaining each one of us in perfect health eternally.
The biblical source for this Science is the spiritual account of creation found in the King James Bible in Genesis 1 where Spirit alone creates everything in this universe, and everything Spirit creates is very good. It says that Spirit creates man—male and female—in the divine image and likeness. Therefore, each one of us is, in reality, the perfect, good and harmonious image of God, divine Love. We are able to prove this here and now, in proportion to our fidelity to God’s law.
The Bible has seven synonyms for God—Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Life, Truth and Love—therefore, as God’s perfect reflection, we each naturally express the spiritual qualities of those divine synonyms. When we understand this, and reject the sin of loving or trusting self and matter, we find ourselves becoming freer and freer from self-imposed material limitations, idiosyncrasies, deficiencies, diseases, deformities, lack or loss.
Mrs. Eddy, a life-long student of the Bible, discovered the Christ power to heal when, after rejecting matter-based treatments, she was completely restored through prayer alone from the potentially fatal effects of a serious injury. As she began consistently and successfully healing others through this Christianly scientific healing method, she was led to write a textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, to explain how each one of us can demonstrate this healing power—to the degree that we follow Christ and obey God’s commandments.
Christian Science is a way of life which brings us closer to the source of all Life--our Father-Mother God, infinite Good, divine Love--and it enables us to demonstrate that health, peace and purity are natural to every single one of us as God’s image and likeness and can never be lost because Spirit is our Life eternally.
